O-Calc Pro News – June 2, 2025

This O-Calc Pro WIKI post describes two items of significance to the O-Calc Pro user base. The first item is related to Microsoft’s decommissioning of the Bing Maps for Enterprise Platform and how this relates to the O-Calc Pro application. The second item gives a brief description of the major items included in the upcoming O-Calc Pro release, Version 8.0, scheduled for the fall of 2025.

Microsoft’s End of Life announcement for Bing Maps

Below is an announcement published by Microsoft on May 28th, 2025, indicating that Bing Maps for Enterprise Platform will be decommissioned on June 30, 2025. This potentially impacts O-Calc Pro Line Design users who make use of the various Bing Maps as their Line Design map backdrop.

Within the O-Calc Pro Line Design functionality, we offer assorted options in terms of which Map backdrop you wish to use in the Line Design map area. The three Bing Map options are: Bing Map, Bing Satellite Map, and Bing Hybrid Map. As soon as Microsoft decommissions Bing Maps, these three map options will not be available for use within the current released version of O-Calc Pro, Version 7.01.11, shown here:

O-Calc Pro users who currently make use of the Bing Map options will need to switch to another option within the Tile Source drop-down menu.

It is Osmoses’ and the O-Calc Pro Team’s intention to make available the Microsoft Azure Maps option within the O-Calc Pro Line Design map view. An implementation investigation has begun, but an actual release date is yet to be determined by Osmose. At a minimum, with the next O-Calc Pro V8.0 release (see more details below), the option to use Bing Maps will be removed from the O-Calc Pro Line Design interface.

Announcing O-Calc Pro V8.0 Release – Fall 2025

Osmose releases an updated version of the O-Calc Pro software every 10 to 15 months, as we have done for the past 10 years. The O-Calc Pro development team is currently hard at work on the next upcoming release, tentatively scheduled for early fall of this year. O-Calc Pro V8.0 release will include the following significant updates to the application, as well as minor updates:

  • 3D View graphic conversion from DirectX to OpenGL – O-Calc Pro users may not explicitly see a difference in how O-Calc Pro models are rendered in the 3D View, but overall performance will increase. This change enables the viewing of LiDAR Point Clouds at maximum point cloud density.
  • Webservice Endpoints – A published SDK (software development kit) of various O-Calc Pro endpoints will enable other systems within your network environment to be integrated with O-Calc Pro. This is useful when your O-Calc Pro installation makes use of a Pole Loading Database (PLDB) and the Line Connectivity Index (LCI) plugin. Integration endpoints include the ability to serve up full PPLX files, the standard O-Calc Pro Analysis Report, or other O-Calc Pro reports, and various O-Calc Pro attribute data.
  • Sag Tension Table Generation Tool Updates – Updates have been made to this existing tool in O-Calc Pro that enable end users to create sag/tension tables based on various environmental parameters (such as temperature, wind speed, and ice thickness). This tool can be used to create stringing charts for various types of conductors, messengers, or communication bundles.
  • Clearance Analysis Report Expanded – O-Calc Pro has always had a clearance analysis tool that could be configured to the various safety standards. A new clearance analysis process and report have been implemented that is more thorough and can be extended. It also includes a standard O-Calc Pro Clearance Analysis Report, not unlike the standard O-Calc Pro Analysis Report.
  • LiDAR Ingestion Plugin (Add-on) – With the upcoming O-Calc Pro V8.0 release, a new plugin enables the loading of LiDAR point cloud data (via a LAS or LAZ file) in the O-Calc Pro interface to aid in the modeling of poles and line designs. Point cloud data can be visualized either as an overlay on the Line Design map area or within the 3D View. Users can then make use of the point cloud data to reposition poles, adjust attachment heights, and even help determine the tension/sag of conductors and cables. Please note that this plugin is licensed as an add-on to your current annual subscription.
  • SPIDAcalc* Ingestion Plugin (Add-on) – This new O-Calc Pro plugin will enable the ingestion of the SPIDAcalc ‘Client’ and individual ‘Results’ files to convert them into O-Calc Pro pole loading models. Once the Client file has been read into the O-Calc Pro system, the O-Calc Pro LE Configuration plugin enables the proper mapping from Client file entries to O-Calc Pro Master Catalog equipment objects. This mapping, performed by the end user, will then be used to convert the ‘Results’ files into O-Calc Pro PPLX files. Please note that this plugin is licensed as an add-on to your current annual subscription.

* SPIDAcalc is a Bentley Systems product.
