A large city in the Southeast is now at the forefront of a movement to reclaim its city streets for pedestrians. Flashy projects usually get all the attention, but a big part of making city streets safe is adequate, well-maintained lighting. With limited resources for maintenance, the city’s streetlights fell into disrepair over the years.

Working with the local power company, this city launched a campaign in 2022 to upgrade nearly 20,000 fixtures to energy-efficient LED technology and improve upkeep. As part of that campaign, the city sold its streetlights to the power company for future maintenance.
